Pat Roach

Proud and passionate Angle Pat Roach, born and raised in Birmingham, England, grew up to become a man six feet tall, five inches wide at the shoulders, with doorframe-width arms and a barrel chest. Pat competed under the name "Bomber" Roach and once organized both the British and European Heavyweight Wrestling Championships. While still wrestling, Roach made his acting debut with a small role in Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon (1975). He quickly became popular as an executioner or warrior figure and appeared on screen alongside some of Hollywood's biggest names. Many people remember him as the muscular, bald German guard who punched Harrison Ford in Les aventuriers de l'arche perdue (1981) and was sliced by a spinning airplane propeller before being killed. In other film roles, Roach nearly eliminated 007 Sean Connery in the Bond film Never Say Never Again (1983); played dual roles as a resurrected demon and a fierce warrior; fought Arnold Schwarzenegger in Conan the Destroyer (1984), the sequel to Conan; and returned as a savage Indian guard who punched hapless Harrison Ford again in Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom. He also appeared in Doom (1984) before being crushed by the rock crusher, as well as in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade (1989), Red Sonja (1985), and Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves (1991). In addition to his cinema work, Pat ran a gym in Birmingham, dealt in second-hand equipment at local markets, and was known as a warm-hearted, smiling man who delighted in chatting with devoted fans, signing autographs, and posing for photos. Roach was also quite popular among British television audiences for portraying the gentle giant "Brian 'Bomber' Busbridge" in the series Auf Wiedersehen, Pet (1983), and it had been planned for him to appear in the show's fifth series when he died of cancer on July 17, 2004.
