Ronald Lacey

Ronald Lacey was born on September 28, 1935, in Harrow, London, England. After completing his education at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), he began his career in the early 1960s. With his distinctive facial features, particularly his bulging eyes and sinister smile, he quickly became one of the sought-after character actors in British cinema and television. He was known for portraying eccentric, odd, or malevolent characters. In the UK, he gained widespread recognition for his role as the prisoner Harris in the popular BBC sitcom "Porridge."

However, the role that transformed Lacey into an international icon and cemented his name in film history was that of Nazi Gestapo Lieutenant Arnold Toht in Steven Spielberg's "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981). Lacey brought Toht to life with a cold-blooded, sadistic, and terrifying demeanor, creating one of cinema's most unforgettable and loathed villains. The character's final scene, where his face melts away due to the power of the Ark of the Covenant, is regarded as one of the most shocking and memorable moments in film history.

Following this legendary role, Lacey continued to appear in international productions in similar roles. He further solidified this image by portraying villainous characters in films such as "Firefox" (1982), directed by Clint Eastwood; "Red Sonja" (1985), in which he shared the lead role with Arnold Schwarzenegger; and "Flesh+Blood" (1985).

Ronald Lacey passed away on May 15, 1991, at the age of 55 due to liver failure after struggling for some time with cancer.
