Biography

Andrés Arturo García Menéndez, known professionally as Andy Garcia, was born on April 12, 1956, in Havana, Cuba. The son of a successful lawyer and farmer father and an English teacher mother, Garcia moved to the United States with his family at the age of five following the Bay of Pigs Invasion in 1961, settling in Miami, Florida. Although he had a strong interest in basketball during his youth, he was forced to quit sports after contracting an illness and turned toward acting while studying at Florida International University. To advance his career, Garcia relocated to Los Angeles, where he began gaining recognition with small roles in television series such as "Hill Street Blues" in the early 1980s and in films like "The Mean Season" (1985) and "8 Million Ways to Die" (1986). His major breakthrough in Hollywood and proof of his talent to a wide audience came through his portrayal of agent George Stone in Brian De Palma's crime masterpiece "The Untouchables" (1987), in which he starred alongside Kevin Costner, Sean Connery, and Robert De Niro.

Following this success, he shared the lead role with Michael Douglas in Ridley Scott's film "Black Rain" (1989). However, the performance that truly made Garcia a cinema star and earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor was his portrayal of the ruthless and charismatic Vincent Mancini in the final installment of Francis Ford Coppola's legendary series, "The Godfather Part III" (1990). Throughout the 1990s, he demonstrated his versatility in dramatic and dark roles by starring in successful productions such as "Internal Affairs" (1990), "When a Man Loves a Woman" (1994), and "Night Falls on Manhattan" (1996). By the 2000s, he further solidified his place in modern popular culture through his role as the cool-headed casino owner Terry Benedict in the ensemble-cast, box-office hit "Ocean's Eleven" (2001) and its sequels, "Ocean's Twelve" (2004) and "Ocean's Thirteen" (2007). In the later stages of his career, he appeared in "Mamma Mia! We're Dancing Again" (Mamma Mia!

He continued to showcase his experience through various projects such as "Here We Go Again" (2018), "The Mule" (2018), and "Father of the Bride" (2022). In addition to his acting career, Garcia frequently reflects his attachment to his roots in his projects. Known for his passion for Cuban music and culture, the actor also works as a pianist and composer, successfully bringing this legacy to the big screen with the film "The Lost City" (2005), which he directed, produced, and starred in.
