Biography
Benedict Timothy Carlton Cumberbatch was born on July 19, 1976, in London, England.
Cumberbatch, from an acting family, has parents Timothy Carlton and Wanda Ventham, both well-known actors.
After attending the prestigious Harrow School, he studied drama at the University of Manchester and then completed his classical acting training at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), launching his professional career on the theatre stage.
Early in his career, Cumberbatch received acclaim for his roles in theatre; his first major breakthrough came in 2004 with his portrayal of Stephen Hawking in the BBC television film "Hawking," earning him his first BAFTA nomination.
However, the role that transformed him into an international star and brought him global recognition was his depiction of modern Sherlock Holmes in the BBC series "Sherlock," which aired from 2010 to 2017.
This iconic role earned him numerous awards and nominations, including an Emmy Award.
Following the success brought by "Sherlock," he rapidly ascended in his film career.
He appeared in significant films such as "Atonement" (2007), "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" (2011), and "War Horse" (2011). He demonstrated his versatility with his voice acting and motion capture performance as the villainous character Khan in "Star Trek Into Darkness" (2013) and as the dragon Smaug in "The Hobbit" trilogy. In 2014, he solidified his place among Hollywood's leading actors by portraying mathematician Alan Turing, who broke the Enigma machine during World War II, in the lead role of "The Imitation Game," earning him nominations for an Academy Award, a Golden Globe, and a BAFTA for Best Actor. In 2016, he joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe, bringing Dr. Stephen Strange to life in the film "Doctor Strange." He continued this role with box office successes in "Avengers: Infinity War" (2018), "Avengers: Endgame" (2019), and "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" (2022). His performance as the complex character Phil Burbank in Jane Campion's directed film "The Power of the Dog" (2021) earned him critical acclaim, including a second Oscar nomination.
Known for his distinctive voice, classical acting foundation, and mastery in portraying intelligent, charismatic yet flawed characters, Cumberbatch is regarded as one of the most talented and respected actors of his generation.
