Biography

Colin Andrew Firth was born on 10 September 1960 in Grayshott, Hampshire, England, to an academic family. Due to his parents' roles as university lecturers, he spent a significant part of his childhood in Nigeria and the United States; upon returning to England, he received professional acting training at Drama Centre London. The actor began his career on stage with classic plays such as "Hamlet," then transitioned to film with his performance in the 1984 movie "Another Country." He further demonstrated his talent by appearing in period films including "A Month in the Country" (1987) and "Valmont" (1989). The pivotal moment that transformed him into an international star overnight was his role in the 1995 BBC series "Pride and Prejudice." In this adaptation of Jane Austen's classic novel, he portrayed the cold, distant yet charismatic aristocrat Mr. Fitzwilliam Darcy, a performance that established him as a global romantic icon. Following this success, he took supporting roles in prestigious productions such as "The English Patient" (1996) and "Shakespeare in Love" (1998).

In the 2000s, he made a modern reference to the iconic Mr. Darcy image through his role as Mark Darcy in the "Bridget Jones's Diary" (2001) series and became an indispensable face in romantic comedies with box-office hit productions such as "Love Actually" (2003) and "Mamma Mia!" (2008). However, Colin Firth did not limit himself to romantic roles but repeatedly proved his dramatic depth. He delivered one of the best performances of his career and earned his first Oscar nomination by portraying a grieving professor in "A Single Man" (2009), directed by Tom Ford. His peak achievement came with "The King's Speech" (2010), directed by Tom Hooper, where he won Oscars, BAFTAs, and Golden Globes for Best Actor for his portrayal of King George VI, struggling to overcome his stammer while bearing the weight of the throne. In the later phase of his career, he made a surprising move by stepping into action cinema with "Kingsman: The Secret Service" (2014) and its sequel "Kingsman: The Golden Circle" (2017), proving his mettle as an action star in his fifties with the role of Harry Hart (Galahad).

In recent years, he has continued to demonstrate his versatility as an actor with roles in Sam Mendes' "1917" (2019), shared the lead role with Stanley Tucci in "Supernova" (2020), and appeared in HBO's true-crime series "The Staircase" (2022). Firth, who also holds Italian citizenship, continues to contribute to the film industry through his producing career.
