Biography
Gary Leonard Oldman was born in London, England, on March 21, 1958.
Growing up in a working-class family, Oldman developed an interest in music and acting at a young age.
After receiving his acting training at Rose Bruford College, he began his career in the late 1970s in London theatres, quickly drawing attention with his stage talent.
Oldman took his first step into cinema with the 1982 film "Remembrance," but truly made his mark with raw and intense performances as punk rock icon Sid Vicious in "Sid and Nancy" (1986) and controversial playwright Joe Orton in "Prick Up Your Ears" (1987).
These early roles showcased his ability to embody characters and his passionate approach to acting.
Throughout the 1990s, Oldman solidified his reputation by bringing some of Hollywood's most unforgettable and unconventional characters to life.
In Bram Stoker's *Dracula* (1992), he portrayed Count Dracula; in *True Romance* (1993), he played Drexl Spivey; in *Léon: The Professional* (1994), he depicted the corrupt agent Norman Stansfield; in *The Fifth Element* (1997), he portrayed Jean-Baptiste Emanuel Zorg; and in *Air Force One* (1997), he played terrorist Ivan Korshunov, etching these iconic villain roles into memory. During the same period, he demonstrated his ability to perform across a wide range of genres by portraying Lee Harvey Oswald in *JFK* (1991) and Ludwig van Beethoven in *Immortal Beloved* (1994). Throughout his career, Oldman was highly respected as a character actor, but it was not until the 2000s that he reached new generations of audiences through roles in two major film franchises: he played Sirius Black in the *Harry Potter* series and Commissioner James Gordon in Christopher Nolan's *The Dark Knight* trilogy. Despite his long and successful career, his first Academy Award nomination came for his portrayal of George Smiley in *Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy* (2011), adapted from John le Carré.
In 2017, he crowned his career with an incredible transformation in his portrayal of Winston Churchill in the film "Darkest Hour," winning the Academy Award, Golden Globe, BAFTA, and SAG Award for Best Actor. In 2020, he was nominated for an Oscar again for his role as Herman J. Mankiewicz in the film "Mank." Beyond acting, Oldman wrote and directed "Nil by Mouth" (1997), a film drawing from his own childhood and acclaimed by critics; it won BAFTA Awards for Best British Film and Best Original Screenplay. As of April 2025, Oldman continues to actively pursue his career, receiving praise and nominations for awards such as the Golden Globe for his portrayal of Jackson Lamb in the espionage series "Slow Horses" (2022–present), which airs on Apple TV+ and has garnered significant acclaim. Additionally, he appeared in Christopher Nolan's 2023 film "Oppenheimer" as Harry S. Truman.
