Biography

Gillian Leigh Anderson was born on August 9, 1968, in Chicago, Illinois, USA.
A significant portion of her childhood was spent between London, England, and Grand Rapids, Michigan, which enabled her to embrace both British and American cultures and use both accents fluently.
After graduating from the prestigious School of Theatre at DePaul University in Chicago, she began her career on the New York stage.
However, the role that transformed Gillian Anderson into a global superstar and left an indelible mark on popular culture was that of FBI Special Agent Dana Scully in the legendary science fiction series "The X-Files", which premiered in 1993.
Scully, portrayed as a skeptic, intelligent, and science-dedicated doctor, became one of the most powerful and inspiring female role models in television history.
With this role, Anderson won numerous awards, including Emmys and Golden Globes.
The series became a phenomenon that defined a generation, following its original run from 1993 to 2002, with two feature films and new seasons in 2016–2018.

In the period following "The X-Files," Anderson demonstrated her dramatic prowess in cinema through performances in films such as "The House of Mirth" (2000) and "The Last King of Scotland" (2006). Simultaneously, she became one of the most respected figures on London's theatre stage and was nominated for a Laurence Olivier Award for her roles in plays like "A Streetcar Named Desire." Throughout her career, Anderson repeatedly reached new peaks of acclaim, earning widespread praise for her performances in BBC series such as "Bleak House" and "Great Expectations." Between 2013 and 2016, she added another iconic role to her modern television repertoire by portraying the composed detective Stella Gibson in the psychological thriller series "The Fall." In recent years, she reached a younger audience through her comedic portrayal of therapist Jean Milburn in the Netflix series "Sex Education" (2019–2023). One of her greatest critical achievements came from playing British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in the series "The Crown," a performance that earned her two Emmy and Golden Globe nominations for Best Supporting Actress in 2021.

In addition to acting, Gillian Anderson is also a writer and activist; she is recognized as one of the most talented and respected artists of her generation for portraying intelligent, complex, and strong female characters.
