Biography
James David Greenblatt, professionally known as James Marshall, was born on January 2, 1967, in Queens, New York, USA. As the son of a producer father and a former Radio City Music Hall dancer mother, Marshall grew up immersed in the arts. After moving to California with his family during his youth, he turned toward acting. He launched his career in the late 1980s as a guest actor in television series such as "Growing Pains" and "China Beach," quickly becoming one of Hollywood's most promising young faces. The role that introduced Marshall to wide audiences and secured his lasting place in popular culture was that of James Hurley, a troubled yet kind-hearted rebellious motorcyclist, in the legendary television classic "Twin Peaks" (1990–1991), created by directors David Lynch and Mark Frost. Following the show's massive global success, Marshall brought the same character to the big screen with the 1992 pioneering feature film "Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me." The year 1992 proved to be the actor's most brilliant and productive year in his career. In addition to the "Twin Peaks" film, Cuba Gooding Jr.
He received positive reviews from critics for his performance as Tommy Riley in the underground boxing drama "Gladiator," in which he shared leading roles. In the same year, he starred alongside stars such as Tom Cruise, Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, and Kevin Pollak in "A Few Good Men" (1992), one of the most prestigious productions in cinema history, directed by Rob Reiner. In this film, he portrayed Er Louden Downey, a man accused of murder and manipulated by his loyalty, thereby demonstrating his dramatic talent and proving his weight in big-budget productions. His rapid rise in Hollywood and promising career were tragically interrupted due to serious health issues stemming from side effects of a medication he used. After suffering severe gastrointestinal disorders, having his colon removed, and undergoing numerous dangerous surgeries to survive, Marshall was forced to step away from acting for many years, dedicating himself to a struggle for life and a legal battle. Upon recovering his health, the actor gradually returned to the industry, appearing in series such as "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation" and independent films.
However, he achieved his most emotional career comeback by reprising the legendary character of James Hurley in the series "Twin Peaks: The Return" (2017), which aired after a full 25-year hiatus. In addition to his talent in front of the camera, Marshall is professionally engaged with music, writing and performing his own songs. He is married to Renee Griffin, who is also an actress like him.
