Biography

Leati Joseph "Joe" Anoa'i, whose ring name is Roman Reigns, was born on May 25, 1985, in Pensacola, Florida. A member of the legendary Anoa'i wrestling family, Anoa'i was born into a wrestling legacy as the son of WWE Hall of Famer Sika Anoa'i and part of "The Wild Samoans" team. However, his first passion for sports was American football. He made a name for himself as a defensive player at Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and served as team captain. After brief NFL stints with the Minnesota Vikings and Jacksonville Jaguars in 2007, he played for Edmonton Eskimos of the Canadian Football League (CFL) before ending his football career in 2008. Following in family footsteps, Anoa'i signed a contract with WWE in 2010 and entered the main roster in 2012 under the name "Roman Reigns" after completing his training in the developmental territory FCW. The group he formed with Seth Rollins and Dean Ambrose known as "The Shield" became one of the most impactful teams in WWE history. Following the disbandment of the group, Reigns focused on his solo career under the nickname "The Big Dog," winning the WWE World Heavyweight Championship multiple times and achieving the feat of becoming the second wrestler to defeat The Undertaker at WrestleMania.

During this period, he gained a large fanbase but also became the target of criticism due to being selected by the company as one of its faces. In 2018, he stepped away from wrestling after announcing that his leukemia had recurred; returning to the ring in 2019 after overcoming the disease marked one of the most emotional moments of his career. Reigns' true era-defining period, which would alter both his career and modern professional wrestling history, began in 2020. Donning the personas of "The Tribal Chief" and "Head of the Table," Reigns transitioned into a villainous role (heel) under the management of Paul Heyman. Together with The Usos and Solo Sikoa, he dominated WWE through his faction "The Bloodline." He held the Universal Championship for 1,316 days, achieving the longest championship reign in modern times since Hulk Hogan. This historic reign ended at WrestleMania XL (2024) with a loss to Cody Rhodes. Beyond the ring, Joe Anoa'i also took steps in his outside career; alongside his cousin Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson, he portrayed the character Mateo Hobbs in the action film *Fast & Furious: Hobbs & Shaw* (2019).

She also voiced characters in the films "The Wrong Missy" (2020) and the animated film "Rumble" (2021). As of 2024, Reigns has returned to WWE as the "Original Tribal Chief" (OTC) and is regarded as one of the biggest stars in the industry.
