Biography

Josh O'Connor was born on 20 May 1990 in Southampton, England.
Growing up in Cheltenham within an artistically inclined family as the grandson of a sculptor, O'Connor completed his acting training at the prestigious Bristol Old Vic Theatre School and graduated in 2011.
He launched his professional career with guest roles on television in popular productions such as "Lewis", "Doctor Who", and "Peaky Blinders".
One of his first significant cinematic experiences came with the film "The Riot Club" (2014).
The project that introduced him to a wide audience and demonstrated his talent was his portrayal of author Lawrence Durrell in the series "The Durrells" (2016–2019), adapted from the autobiographical works of renowned writer Gerald Durrell.
However, the true breakthrough in O'Connor's career and the production that established him as one of the sought-after faces of independent cinema was Francis Lee's film "God's Own Country" (2017).
In this film, his portrayal of Johnny Saxby, an emotionally withdrawn farmer leading a difficult life, received critical acclaim and earned him the British Independent Film Award (BIFA) for Best Actor.

This achievement demonstrated his mastery in portraying profound and complex characters. The role that propelled Josh O'Connor to global stardom and generated significant buzz in mainstream media was Netflix's hit series "The Crown." In seasons 3 and 4 of the series (2019–2020), the actor brought Prince Charles of Wales to life, capturing with great sensitivity the character's loneliness, his feeling of being trapped under royal pressure, and his turbulent relationship with Diana. This unforgettable performance earned him a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series and a Golden Globe Award. Following "The Crown," O'Connor enriched his career with international projects, continuing his success in period films with roles such as Mr. Elton in "Emma" (2020) and Paul Sheringham in "Mothering Sunday" (2021). In Alice Rohrwacher's Italian film "La Chimera" (2023), he starred as Arthur, an archaeologist searching for his lost love, and received acclaim at the Cannes Film Festival.

In 2024, she portrayed Patrick Zweig in Luca Guadagnino's tennis-themed romantic drama "Challengers," sharing the lead roles with Zendaya and Mike Faist, once again demonstrating her versatile acting abilities. Beyond acting, O'Connor is deeply engaged with other artistic disciplines; she is a passionate ceramic artist and photographer.
