Biography
Keanu Reeves was born on September 2, 1964, in Beirut, Lebanon. The son of an English mother and an American father of Hawaiian, Chinese, English, Irish, and Portuguese descent, Reeves spent his childhood years with his mother in Sydney, New York, and primarily Toronto, Canada, where he acquired Canadian citizenship. Although he showed interest in ice hockey during his youth, his passion for acting prevailed, leading him to begin appearing in theatrical productions and commercials in Toronto. Moving to Los Angeles to pursue his acting career, Reeves took on his first notable roles in films such as "Youngblood" (1986) and the critically acclaimed "River's Edge" (1986). However, the production that introduced him to a wide audience was the comedy film "Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure" (1989), in which he shared the lead role with Alex Winter and portrayed the iconic character Ted "Theodore" Logan, followed by its sequel, "Bill & Ted's Bogus Journey" (1991). Throughout the 1990s, Reeves enriched his career with roles in various genres. In Gus Van Sant's independent drama "My Own Private Idaho" (1991), he demonstrated his dramatic capabilities alongside River Phoenix.
He proved his action prowess with films such as "Point Break" (1991) and, in particular, shared the lead role in the box-office record-breaking "Speed" (1994) with Sandra Bullock, establishing himself as an action star. During this period, he also appeared in productions like "Dracula from Bram Stoker" (1992) and "Much Ado About Nothing" (1993). He garnered acclaim for his performance in "The Devil's Advocate" (1997). However, the role that elevated Keanu Reeves to global icon status and marked a turning point in cinema history was Neo in the groundbreaking science fiction film "Matrix" (1999), directed by the Wachowski siblings. The film and its sequels ("The Matrix Reloaded" 2003, "The Matrix Revolutions" 2003, "The Matrix Resurrections" 2021) redefined action cinema and propelled Reeves' career to new heights. Following "Matrix," although he took on roles in films of various genres such as "Constantine" (2005), "A Scanner Darkly" (2006), and "The Lake House" (2006), the project that sparked a new surge in his career was the 2014 neo-noir action film "John Wick."
In this film, where he portrays a retired hitman, Reeves achieved an unexpected success, establishing himself as one of the most significant figures in modern action cinema. The series, distinguished by its intense physical performances and stylized action sequences, continued with "John Wick: Chapter 2" (2017), "John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum" (2019), and "John Wick: Chapter 4" (2023), garnering a massive fanbase. A fifth installment in the series is currently in development. Beyond his acting career, Reeves is also a co-founder of Arch Motorcycle Company. In 2023–2024, he released a new album and embarked on a tour with Dogstar, the band he fronts as lead guitarist. Additionally, the comic book series "BRZRKR," which he wrote, is being adapted into a film and an anime series by Netflix.
