Biography
Kiefer William Frederick Dempsey George Rufus Sutherland was born on December 21, 1966, in Paddington, London, England.
As the son of legendary Canadian actors Donald Sutherland and Shirley Douglas, he entered the world of cinema from birth.
He is also a grandson of Tommy Douglas, the politician regarded as the founder of Canada's social health system.
A citizen of both England and Canada, Sutherland spent his childhood and youth between California and Toronto, Canada, before deciding to pursue his passion for acting.
Beginning his acting career in the early 1980s, he secured his first significant role in the Canadian film "The Bay Boy" (1984), earning him a nomination for a Genie Award for this performance.
However, it was the films directed by Rob Reiner, "Stand by Me" (1986), in which he played the bully "Ace" Merrill, and the cult vampire film "The Lost Boys" (1987), where he portrayed the charismatic leader David, that transformed him into an international star and established him as one of the iconic faces of the 1980s generation.
During this period, he also solidified his place among the era's most popular young actors with films such as "Young Guns" (1988) and "Flatliners" (1990). Throughout the 1990s, Sutherland proved himself a versatile actor by taking on significant supporting roles in high-profile productions such as Lieutenant Jonathan Kendrick in "A Few Good Men" (1992), Athos in Disney's adaptation of "The Three Musketeers" (1993), and Joel Schumacher's "A Time to Kill" (1996). Additionally, he portrayed Dr. Daniel Schreber in the critically acclaimed science fiction-noir film "Dark City" (1998). However, the role that transformed Kiefer Sutherland into a global television icon and redefined his career was his portrayal of Federal Agent Jack Bauer in the groundbreaking television series "24," which premiered in 2001. With its real-time format, the series revolutionized television history and earned Sutherland numerous awards, including Golden Globe Awards in 2002 and an Emmy Award in 2006. The character of Jack Bauer became one of the most unforgettable anti-heroes in television history.
The "24" saga continued with the 2014 miniseries "24: Live Another Day." Sutherland carried on her television success with the lead role in the series "Designated Survivor" (2016–2019), where she portrayed Tom Kirkman, the U.S. president following an attack. In cinema, she garnered attention with the western film "Forsaken" (2015), in which she starred alongside her father, Donald Sutherland. Beyond acting, Sutherland has also pursued music professionally; since 2016, she has released albums in country and folk-rock styles and actively tours.
