Biography

Mads Dittmann Mikkelsen was born on November 22, 1965, in the Østerbro district of Copenhagen, Denmark. His father was a taxi driver and his mother a nurse; he also has an older brother named Lars Mikkelsen, who is also an actor like him. During his youth, Mikkelsen trained in gymnastics and dance with the aim of becoming a professional dancer. After dancing for about ten years, he shifted his focus to drama and acting, graduating from the Aarhus Theatre School in 1996. He began his acting career with director Nicolas Winding Refn's cult film "Pusher" (1996). In this film, he immediately attracted attention in Danish cinema with his portrayal of Tonny, a gaunt and tattooed drug dealer, and was elevated to the lead role in the series' second film, "Pusher II" (2004), where he received widespread acclaim for his performance. Throughout his career in Denmark, he became known for roles in dark comedies such as "De Grønne Slagtere" (2003) and "Adams Æbler" (2005). Mikkelsen's true international breakthrough came with his role as Le Chiffre, a bloodthirsty villain, in the James Bond film "Casino Royale" (2006). This role opened doors for him to become a sought-after character actor in Hollywood.

However, he never severed his ties with Danish cinema and achieved one of the greatest successes of his career with his performance in "The Hunt" (2012), directed by Thomas Vinterberg. For this role, in which he portrayed a teacher unjustly accused of child abuse, he won the Best Actor award at the 2012 Cannes Film Festival. One of the roles that brought him global recognition was Dr. Hannibal Lecter in the series "Hannibal," which aired between 2013 and 2015. With this role, critics gave him full marks for his sophisticated and chilling interpretation of the iconic character. Throughout his career, he took on significant roles in high-budget productions such as Kaecilius in "Doctor Strange" (2016), Galen Erso in "Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" (2016), and Gellert Grindelwald in "Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore" (2022). He once again won the critics' favor with "Druk" (2020), a film in which he reunited with Thomas Vinterberg. Finally, he also appeared in "Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny" (2023).

With his unique charisma and wide acting range, Mikkelsen is regarded as one of today's most respected European actors.
