Biography
David Matthew Macfadyen was born on 17 October 1974 in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, England.
The son of a petroleum engineer and a theatre teacher, Macfadyen spent parts of his childhood in various locations such as Indonesia and Scotland due to his father's work.
His interest in acting led him to the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, from which he graduated in 1995.
He began his professional career with the Cheek by Jowl theatre company, performing in classic plays such as "The Duchess of Malfi" and "Much Ado About Nothing".
His first major television breakthrough came with his portrayal of Heathcliff in the film adaptation of Emily Brontë's novel, "Wuthering Heights" (1998).
The production that introduced Macfadyen to audiences across England was the BBC's popular spy series "Spooks" (2002–2004).
He received widespread acclaim for his role as MI5 agent Tom Quinn in the series and met his future wife, Keeley Hawes, on set.
His most significant leap into cinema came with Joe Wright's film "Pride & Prejudice" (2005).
In this production, he shared the lead role with Keira Knightley and gained international recognition for his sensitive and charismatic portrayal of Mr. Darcy, one of the most challenging characters in literary history. Throughout his career, Macfadyen demonstrated his versatility by taking on a wide range of roles from drama to comedy, proving his adaptability through performances in Frank Oz's dark comedy "Death at a Funeral" (2007) and Ron Howard's "Frost/Nixon" (2008). In the television world, he won the BAFTA Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the series "Little Dorrit" (2008) and played the lead role of Detective Edmund Reid in the period crime drama "Ripper Street" (2012–2016). However, he reached the pinnacle of his career with HBO's phenomenon "Succession" (2018–2023). The character he portrayed, Tom Wambsgans, earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe; critics praised his masterful depiction of the character's ambition, sycophancy, and complex emotional world. Even after "Succession," the actor continued at full speed, portraying Lieutenant Charles Ingram in the true-story-based series "Quiz" (2020) and Ewen Montagu in the film "Operation Mincemeat" (2021).
Macfadyen made his Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) debut in 2024 with the box office hit "Deadpool & Wolverine," portraying the character Mr. Paradox. The actor, who has not forgotten his theatrical roots and continues to achieve success on screen, is married to Keeley Hawes and is the father of two children.
