Biography

Michael S. Stuhlbarg was born on July 5, 1968, in Long Beach, California. He possesses an extraordinary educational background that shaped his approach to the art of acting. He studied drama at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York, earned a master's degree from UCLA, spent time at the National Theatre in London, and even had the opportunity to work with the legendary pantomime artist Marcel Marceau. This intensive and diverse training forms the foundation of his chameleon-like acting ability. Stuhlbarg began his career on the New York theatre scene in the 1990s and quickly distinguished himself through his talent. His greatest stage achievement came from portraying the lead role in Martin McDonagh's dark comedy play "The Pillowman" in its 2005 Broadway production. This performance earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor, further cementing his respected place in the theatre world. The project that introduced Stuhlbarg to cinema as a leading actor was the 2009 film "A Serious Man," directed by the Coen Brothers.

In film, he received critical acclaim for his tragicomic portrayal of Larry Gopnik, a Jewish physics professor whose life suddenly goes topsy-turvy. This role earned him a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy and established him as one of Hollywood's most sought-after character actors. Following "A Serious Man," Stuhlbarg entered an exceptionally prolific period. He sustained his television success with his portrayal of the intelligent and cool-headed gangster Arnold Rothstein in HBO's popular series "Boardwalk Empire" (2010–2013). In cinema, he took on key roles in numerous significant films such as "Hugo" (2011), "Lincoln" (2012), "Steve Jobs" (2015), and "Arrival" (2016). The year 2017 became known by critics as the "Stuhlbarg-naissance," or Stuhlbarg's Renaissance; that year he appeared in three films nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars: "The Shape of Water," "Call Me by Your Name," and "The Post." In particular, the touching monologue scene in which the father speaks to his son in "Call Me by Your Name" is regarded as one of the most unforgettable moments in modern cinema.

Finally, he was also nominated for an Emmy Award for his performance in the series "Dopesick" (2021). Tony-nominated, Golden Globe-nominated, and Emmy-nominated Michael Stuhlbarg is one of today's most talented and versatile actors, known for his ability to embody every character he portrays, his intellectual depth, and his quiet intensity. He is regarded by many in the industry as a true "actor's actor."
