Biography

Ray Fearon was born in London, England, on June 1, 1967. A member of an eight-child family of West Indian descent, Fearon developed an interest in acting at a young age and received professional training at the Rose Bruford College of Speech and Drama. The actor laid the strongest foundations of his career on theatre stages, earning great respect particularly for his performances with the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC). Fearon made his mark in theatre history as the first Black actor to play the lead role in "Othello" at the RSC's main stage in Stratford-upon-Avon since Paul Robeson. Additionally, he demonstrated his stage mastery by taking leading roles in classic works such as "The Merchant of Venice" and "Pericles." His first major encounter with a global audience in cinema occurred through the character of Professor Firenze in the film "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" (2001), adapted from J.K. Rowling's work. He further solidified his mainstream fame in England by portraying garage mechanic Nathan Harding in one of the country's longest-running series, "Coronation Street" (2005–2006).

This popularity has further increased following his participation in the "Strictly Come Dancing" competition in 2006. Fearon, who has maintained a balanced career between television and cinema, expanded his international recognition by portraying Carlo de' Medici in the historical fantasy series "Da Vinci's Demons" (2014–2015). He has demonstrated versatility across a wide range of roles, from Kenneth Branagh's adaptation of "Hamlet" (1996) to Père Robert in the live-action film "Beauty and the Beast" (2017). In the action genre, he has appeared in productions such as "The Foreigner" (2017) and "The Protégé" (2021), both featuring Jackie Chan. He also showcased his success in modern comedy-drama with his role as a provocative lawyer in Phoebe Waller-Bridge's cult series "Fleabag". In recent years, Ray Fearon has appeared in prestigious series such as "His Dark Materials" and box-office record-breaking films like "Barbie" (2023), continuing his career as a respected character actor who successfully blends classical theatre discipline with modern screen acting.
