Biography
Russell Ira Crowe was born on April 7, 1964, in Wellington, New Zealand.
Born to a family that worked serving food on film sets, Crowe spent much of his childhood in Sydney, Australia.
After discovering acting at a young age and appearing in various small roles in Australian television series during his youth, he began his career in this region.
The production that established him as an internationally recognized talent was the Australian film "Romper Stomper" (1992), in which he portrayed a ruthless skinhead leader.
Thanks to his striking performance in that film, the actor who opened Hollywood's doors secured a solid place in American cinema with his role as the tough police officer Bud White in "L.A. Confidential" (1997).
In "The Insider" (1999), he earned widespread critical acclaim for his portrayal of whistleblower Jeffrey Wigand and received his first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor.
However, the role that propelled Russell Crowe to global superstar status and etched his name in cinema history was Maximus Decimus Meridius, the Roman general he portrayed in Ridley Scott's box-office record-breaking epic historical film "Gladiator" (2000). With this iconic performance, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor. He continued his success with the following year's release of "A Beautiful Mind" (2001), in which he played John Nash, a mathematical genius suffering from schizophrenia, earning him a third consecutive Oscar nomination for this extraordinary role. Throughout his career, Crowe successfully tackled challenging roles across various genres, starring in significant films such as "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World" (2003), "Cinderella Man" (2005), "3:10 to Yuma" (2007), and "American Gangster" (2007). He showcased his musical talents with Inspector Javert in "Les Misérables" (2012) and portrayed Superman's father, Jor-El, in "Man of Steel" (2013).
He also garnered significant acclaim for his entertaining and tough detective performance in the black comedy "The Nice Guys" (2016), which he co-starred in alongside Ryan Gosling. In recent years, he has maintained an active presence on screen with tension-heavy projects such as "Unhinged" (2020), "The Pope's Exorcist" (2023), and "Sleeping Dogs" (2024). Beyond acting, Crowe has shown interest in behind-the-camera work, directing segments of "The Water Diviner" (2014), a film shot partly in Turkey that tells the story of a father searching for his sons after the Gallipoli Campaign, and "Poker Face" (2022). With a close affinity for music, the actor has previously served as vocalist and guitarist in rock bands such as Thirty Odd Foot of Grunts. He is also a co-owner of the South Sydney Rabbitohs, one of the teams in the Australian National Rugby League.
