Seth Gilliam was born in New York on November 5, 1968.
Gilliam, who graduated from the State University of New York (SUNY) at Purchase in 1990, began his career in the early 1990s by appearing in theatre, film, and television projects.
Possessing a wide acting range, the artist gained attention in his early years with significant roles in films such as "Courage Under Fire" (1996) and Paul Verhoeven's cult science fiction film "Starship Troopers" (1997).
However, one of the most important turning points in Gilliam's career was his portrayal of Sergeant Ellis Carver in HBO's acclaimed series "The Wire" (2002–2008), widely regarded as one of the greatest television dramas ever made.
Throughout the series, he successfully depicted Carver's transformation from a police officer who took the easy way out into a responsible and principled leader.
This role showcased his ability to portray long-form, deeply layered characters and earned him widespread praise from critics.
Gilliam also gained widespread recognition for his portrayal of Father Gabriel Stokes in AMC's phenomenon series "The Walking Dead" (2014–2022).

This character underwent one of the most compelling development arcs in the show. In addition to these two major roles, Seth Gilliam also etched himself into the memories of young audiences through his portrayal of the wise veterinarian Dr. Deaton in MTV's beloved teen drama "Teen Wolf" (2011–2017). With a strong theater background, Seth Gilliam has taken key roles in two of modern television's most acclaimed series and continues his career as a distinguished and versatile character actor.
