Biography
Tommy Flanagan was born on July 3, 1965, in the Easterhouse district of Glasgow, Scotland. His youth, life, and career were profoundly shaped by a pivotal event; the prominent scar marks on his face, resulting from an attack at the end of a night he worked as a DJ and known as the "Glasgow smile," would later add a unique and unforgettable dimension to the characters he brought to life. His interest in acting led him to the stage and enabled him to take his first steps with the Raindog Theatre Company, which also included his close friend Robert Carlyle. His theatre experience opened the doors of the film world for him. Encouraged by Robert Carlyle, he joined the cast of Mel Gibson's epic film Braveheart (1995), where he gained international attention for the first time with his portrayal of the rebellious character Morrison. This role served as a significant springboard in his career and quickly paved the way for his involvement in major productions such as John Woo's Face/Off (1997) and David Fincher's The Game (1997). These early roles demonstrated his ability to portray tough-looking yet charismatic characters.
Flanagan is best remembered for his role as Cicero, the loyal servant of Maximus in Ridley Scott's Oscar-winning film Gladiator (2000). This brief yet impactful role helped solidify his place in Hollywood. Throughout his career, he appeared in films of various genres such as Sin City (2005), Smokin' Aces (2006), and Alien vs. Predator (2004), distinguishing himself as a character actor with a unique physical presence and powerful acting ability. However, the performance that undoubtedly introduced Flanagan to global audiences and became his most iconic role was undoubtedly his portrayal in FX's cult series Sons of Anarchy (2008–2014). The character he played, Filip "Chibs" Telford, won over viewers with his loyalty, wisdom, composure, and devotion to the motorcycle club. Flanagan's Scottish accent and the depth brought from the character's background elevated Chibs to one of the series' most beloved and respected figures; this role proved his lasting impact on television. Following the great success of Sons of Anarchy, Flanagan continued his career without slowing down.
He has appeared as a guest actor in acclaimed series such as Peaky Blinders and Westworld, and portrayed the character Tullk in box office record-breakers like Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017). Recently, Flanagan has garnered attention for his portrayal of Walter Flynn, an Irish mob boss from Chicago, in Power Book IV: Force. By delivering successful performances across diverse genres and platforms, he continues to demonstrate his versatility as an actor. Tommy Flanagan's acting style is distinguished by his ability to bring to life characters who appear tough on the outside but are loyal, with rich inner worlds that often navigate morally grey areas. His physical appearance, particularly the scars on his face, adds a natural depth, lived-in quality, and authenticity to the roles he portrays. Known for his commitment to his craft and unique screen charisma, Flanagan has established himself as one of Hollywood's most recognized and respected character actors.
