Biography
John Wesley Chatham was born on October 11, 1978, in Atlanta, Georgia, USA. Growing up in North Georgia, after graduating from high school, he joined the United States Navy and served as an aviation firefighter aboard the USS Essex amphibious assault ship for four years. This military background and the discipline he acquired provided him with significant physical advantages and credibility in action-heavy and military roles he would portray in later years. His entry into acting was triggered when he was discovered during a search for military personnel while Denzel Washington was filming "Antwone Fisher," though his first official acting experience came in the 2003 film "The Fighting Temptations." Early in his career, he garnered attention with supporting roles in prestigious productions such as Paul Haggis's "In the Valley of Elah" (2007) and Oliver Stone's biographical film "W." (2008). Additionally, he appeared on television as Corporal Sam McBride in CBS's military series "The Unit."
However, the first major productions that brought him to widespread recognition were the award-winning period film "The Help" (2014), in which he played Carlton Phelan, the brother of Emma Stone's character, and immediately following this, his role as Castor in the global phenomenon "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1" (2014) and "Part 2" (2015). Wes Chatham's most defining career milestone and the project that transformed him into a worldwide science fiction icon was the series "The Expanse" (2015–2022). Adapted from James S.A. Corey's novel series, this show featured Chatham as Amos Burton, the loyal, violent-prone yet deeply principled mechanic of the Rocinante ship. His portrayal of Amos became one of the most beloved elements of the series, reflecting both the character's terrifying physical strength and his surprising emotional depth. Following this success, Chatham continued to appear in high-budget productions, taking roles in Sylvester Stallone's "Escape Plan 2: Hades" (2018) and Christopher Nolan's "Tenet" (2020).
More recently, he portrayed the character Captain Enoch in the series "Ahsoka" (2023), joining the Star Wars universe.
