My Cinemas (1990), a dramatic-fantasy that delicately weaves the romantic struggle of a naive young girl in 1960s Istanbul, who views film posters as saviors, drawing viewers into the melancholic rhythm of the era with its atmosphere. The leading duo, shared by Hülya Avşar and Yaman Okay, portrays their characters with multifaceted language, capturing the hope that endures even under the heavy weight of poverty, while the supporting roles played by Sema Aybars and Yaman Tarcan add depth to the social fabric of the story. However, the film can be criticized for sometimes taking an overly romantic tone in its treatment of fantastical elements, and thus not maintaining the tension between the harsh realities of everyday life and the realm of imagination as strongly as it could; particularly the slower pace in the second half, while it does not lead to the climactic, gripping conclusion the viewer might expect, does give space for the film's philosophical inquiries. The film attempts to push the boundaries of the genre by not just focusing on a single kidnapping, but also by exploring the therapeutic effect of cinema on the human spirit through a concrete life story. Fantastic elements, representing the character's internal escape, push the viewer into a balance of both entertainment and contemplation, as the dramatic tension reflects the conflict he creates with his surroundings. While the director successfully preserves the aesthetic features of the era using the cinematic language of the early 90s, the attempt to describe certain scenes in the narrative slows down the flow for the viewer's interest.
