Persecution

Cruelty tells a striking love story of two young people who grew up in the shadow of blood feud. The young man who lost his father in a fire of revenge turns into not an enemy, but also a savior figure in the eyes of the daughter of the same family. The film skillfully uses the silence and shadows in the transitions between scenes while depicting the process of these two characters approaching each other through the conflict between traditional family ties and modern individual desires. In the visual narrative, the neon lights of the dark streets and the gray tones of the rural areas express the inner turmoil of the characters. The music heightens the emotional tension, especially with its acoustic guitar and violin-based choruses; but most notably, a gentle drum beat plays during quiet moments, allowing the tension to breathe. The natural dialogues and facial expressions of the actors lighten the heavy burden of the script and offer a sincerity that draws the audience into the events. The director's control of tempo makes a noticeable difference in both halves of the film. The slowdowns in the first episode enable the characters to confront their past; In the second half, action scenes combine with the emotional climax and leave a permanent mark on the audience.
