Biography
Sir Philip Anthony Hopkins, born on 31 December 1937 in Port Talbot, Wales, is a Welsh actor, composer, and painter regarded as one of the living legends of cinema and theatre. After studying at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, one of the most prestigious institutions in the arts world, he was discovered by the legendary actor Sir Laurence Olivier in 1965 and joined the Royal National Theatre. His powerful performances on stage quickly drew attention, leading him to transition to film. His first major role was that of King Richard I in "The Lion in Winter" (1968), for which he won a BAFTA Award. Although he brought many unforgettable characters to life throughout his career, the role that transformed Anthony Hopkins into a global icon was Dr. Hannibal Lecter, the brilliant cannibalistic serial killer, in the 1991 film "The Silence of the Lambs." Despite appearing on screen for only 16 minutes, his chilling performance is considered one of the most memorable in cinema history and earned him his first Academy Award (Oscar) for Best Actor.
He reprised this iconic role in the films "Hannibal" (2001) and "Red Dragon" (2002). Following the profound impact of his portrayal of Hannibal Lecter, Hopkins continued his career with roles that demonstrated the breadth of his acting range. He was nominated for an Academy Award for his performance as the reclusive and self-sacrificing butler James Stevens in "The Remains of the Day" (1993) and for his depiction of former U.S. President Richard Nixon in Oliver Stone's "Nixon" (1995). Appearing in productions across various genres, including "Amistad" (1997), "Zorro" (1998), and the Marvel Cinematic Universe film "Thor," where he played Odin, he reached audiences of every generation. Despite his advanced age, this master actor lost nothing of his productivity or performance quality, reaching another peak in his career. In Florian Zeller's "The Father" (2020), he delivered a moving and touching performance as a man battling dementia, earning critical acclaim with perfect scores. This role earned him the Academy Award for Best Actor at the age of 83, making him the oldest recipient of this award.
In 1993, Anthony Hopkins was knighted by Queen II Elizabeth for his services to the arts and is regarded as one of cinema's greatest masters due to his discipline, the depth he brings to his characters, and his unforgettable screen charisma.
