Biography

Charlize Theron was born on August 7, 1975, in Benoni, South Africa. As the only child of an Afrikaner family, she grew up on a farm near Johannesburg. With Afrikaans as her native language, Theron experienced a profound tragedy in her early years; at age 15, she witnessed her mother shoot and kill her alcoholic father in self-defense. This event left deep scars on her life. Having received ballet training during her youth, Theron won a modeling competition at age 16 and spent the following year modeling across Europe. She then moved to New York to join the Joffrey Ballet School, but an injury sustained from dancing ended her ballet career. Driven by her dream of acting, she relocated to Los Angeles, where her discovery was serendipitous. While arguing with a bank teller over an uncashed check from South Africa, she caught the attention of an agent. After beginning her career with minor roles, she garnered widespread attention in the late 1990s for her performance in "The Devil's Advocate" (1997), alongside Keanu Reeves and Al Pacino. She subsequently continued her ascent with films such as "The Cider House Rules" (1999).

However, it was the role in the 2003 film "Monster" (Cani) that propelled Charlize Theron to the pinnacle of Hollywood as an actress and secured her a place in cinema history. In the film, she underwent an incredible transformation, becoming physically unrecognizable as she portrayed serial killer Aileen Wuornos. This bold and harrowing performance earned her numerous accolades, including the Academy Award (Oscar) for Best Actress, a Golden Globe, and a SAG Award. The role proved that Theron was not merely a Hollywood star but one of the most talented and dedicated actresses of her generation. Following "Monster," Theron enriched her career with diverse roles. Her performance in "North Country" (2005) earned her another Oscar nomination. In the 2010s, she demonstrated her success in action cinema as well. The character of Imperator Furiosa, which she portrayed in George Miller's modern classic "Mad Max: Fury Road" (2015), was regarded as one of the most iconic action heroes of the 21st century. She reinforced this success by taking on both lead acting and producing roles in films such as "Atomic Blonde" (2017) and "The Old Guard" (2020).

Additionally, she joined the popular "Fast & Furious" franchise as the villainous character Cipher. Throughout her career, Charlize Theron has delivered unforgettable performances across a wide range of genres, from drama to action and from comedy to thriller, maintaining her status as one of Hollywood's most powerful, talented, and respected figures. She became a U.S. citizen in 2007.
