Biography

Harrison Cosmo Krikoryan Jarvis was born on September 1, 1989, in Ridgewood, New Jersey. The son of an Armenian and English family, Jarvis moved to England with his family as a baby and spent his childhood in Totnes, Devon. Beginning his artistic career as a musician, Jarvis gained attention in 2009 with the release of his album "Humasyouhitch/Sonofabitch" and particularly with the viral hit song "Gay Pirates"; however, over time he shifted his creative focus from music to cinema and television. His first major breakthrough in his acting career came through the period drama "Lady Macbeth" (2016), in which he shared the lead role with Florence Pugh and received critical acclaim. This role allowed him to showcase both his physical presence and emotional depth, earning him a nomination for Best Newcomer at the British Independent Film Awards. In the early stages of his career, he also demonstrated his direction toward film production through independent projects such as "The Naughty Room" (2012), which he wrote, directed, and starred in.

One of the performances that solidified Jarvis's acting talent and elevated him to the class of character actor was his portrayal of Douglas 'Arm' Armstrong in Nick Rowland's crime drama "Calm with Horses" (2019). For this role, he embodied a loyal yet violence-prone former boxer who is the father of an autistic child, earning widespread praise from critics. In the same year, he appeared before television audiences as Barney Thompson, a sharpshooter with a traumatic past and former comrade-in-arms to Tommy Shelby, played by Cillian Murphy, in season five of the globally popular series "Peaky Blinders" (2019). The actor, who accelerated his career momentum in the 2020s, took on the role of Campion Sturges in Ridley Scott's HBO Max science fiction series "Raised by Wolves" (2020). He later shared the lead role with Dakota Johnson as Captain Frederick Wentworth in Netflix's adaptation of Jane Austen's "Persuasion" (2022). In independent cinema, he continued to portray complex and often "anti-hero" characters in productions such as "Nocturnal" (2019) and "Funny Face" (2020).

The project that elevated Cosmo Jarvis to global leading man status was the epic historical series "Shōgun" (2024), adapted from James Clavell's famous novel and making a significant impact. In the series, Jarvis portrayed the character of Pilot John Blackthorne (Anjin), an English sailor stranded in feudal Japan who strives to adapt to samurai culture; he successfully took on this challenging role and garnered a wide international fanbase. Recognized for both his musical background and his intense, method-acting style, Jarvis is regarded as one of the most original talents in modern British cinema.
