Biography

David John "Dave" Franco was born on June 12, 1985, in Palo Alto, California. Franco is the son of a writer and poet mother and an entrepreneur father, and he is also the brother of the famous actor James Franco. While studying at the University of Southern California (USC), initially aiming to become a teacher, he began taking acting classes with the guidance of his older brother's manager and embarked on an acting career. In the early stages of his career, Franco took small roles in television series such as "7th Heaven," demonstrating his first notable presence in cinema through supporting roles in films like "Superbad" (2007) and "Charlie St. Cloud" (2010). However, the project that truly introduced him to television audiences was the popular medical comedy series "Scrubs" (2009-2010), where he portrayed Cole Aaronson, a medical student who was both beloved and annoying to viewers in the show's ninth season. Dave Franco's major breakthrough in cinema and recognition by a wide audience occurred with his role as drug dealer Eric Molson in the 2012 action-comedy film "21 Jump Street." This role demonstrated his comedic timing and screen charisma.

Subsequently, he showcased his talents as part of an ensemble cast of stars in the 2013 film "Now You See Me," playing the magician Jack Wilder, and also appeared in its sequel released in 2016. The films "Neighbors" (2014) and its sequel "Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising" (2016), in which he starred alongside Seth Rogen and Zac Efron, solidified Franco's place among Hollywood comedies. Throughout his career, the actor has emphasized genre diversity, winning over a young audience with the techno-thriller "Nerve" (2016), in which he shared leading roles with Emma Roberts. He also portrayed Greg Sestero in "The Disaster Artist" (2017), a critically acclaimed film directed by and starring his brother James Franco that chronicles the making of "The Room," thereby revealing his dramatic capabilities. Additionally, as a voice actor, he brought the character of Lloyd to life in animated projects such as "The LEGO Movie" (2014) and "The LEGO Ninjago Movie" (2017), in which he also starred.

Stepping beyond acting and venturing behind the camera, Dave Franco made a successful debut as a director with "The Rental," a horror-thriller film he wrote and directed in 2020. The film was well-received both at the box office and by critics. Married to actress Alison Brie since 2017, Franco continues his career as one of modern cinema's versatile talents through the projects he produces both on and behind the camera.
