Biography
Harry Edward Melling was born on 13 March 1989 in London, England.
The son of an illustrator and her husband, Harry belongs to one of the most established families in the English acting world.
He is the grandson of the legendary "Doctor Who" actor Patrick Troughton, the nephew of actors David and Michael Troughton, and the cousin of Sam Troughton.
From a young age, Melling showed an interest in stage arts and studied at the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art (LAMDA), where he strengthened his foundation in classical acting.
He began his career as part of a global phenomenon.
In the film "Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone" (2001), adapted from J.K. Rowling's work, he portrayed Dudley Dursley, the spoiled, bullying, and unlikable cousin of the main character.
At only 12 years old, he successfully played this role across all five films in the series (2001–2010).
Before filming began on the final installment, "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1," Melling gained excessive weight, putting his role at risk; however, the producers ensured he could complete it by having him wear a specially designed prosthetic costume to maintain the character's continuity.
This physical transformation was also the first sign of his transition from "chubby child actor" to an adult actor, allowing him to continue his career in that capacity. Following the Harry Potter series, Melling focused on theatre and proved his mettle by performing in significant plays such as "King Lear", "Mother Courage and Her Children", and "The Hothouse". His bold return to cinema came with the Coen Brothers' western anthology "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs" (2018). The role he portrayed in the episode titled "Meal Ticket"—that of Harrison, a limbless, melancholic traveling artist—was met with praise from critics and marked the turning point of his adult acting career. 2020 was truly an explosion year for Harry Melling. In Netflix's global hit series "The Queen's Gambit", he won the sympathy of a wide audience by playing chess master Harry Beltik. That same year, in the psychological thriller film "The Devil All the Time", he terrified audiences with his portrayal of fanatical and menacing preacher Roy Laferty, while in the action film "The Old Guard", he played Merrick, the villainous CEO of a pharmaceutical company. His success in these three distinct and contrasting roles demonstrated his extensive range as an actor.
In recent years, he portrayed young Edgar Allan Poe in Scott Cooper's 2022 film "The Pale Blue Eye," which he co-starred alongside Christian Bale. Melling delivered a masterful performance that captured the eccentricity, intellect, and melancholy of the renowned author, marking one of the finest roles of his career. Carrying on the legacy of his great-grandfather Patrick Troughton, Melling is now regarded as one of Hollywood's most sought-after transformative character actors.
