Biography

Dame Margaret Natalie Smith was born on December 28, 1934, in Ilford, Essex, England.
The daughter of a pathologist father at Oxford University and a secretary mother of Scottish descent, Smith moved to Oxford with her family when she was four years old.
After completing her education at Oxford High School, she pursued her passion for acting by training at the Oxford Playhouse School and made her stage debut in 1952 with the play "Twelfth Night".
Rapidly rising in the theatre world, Smith became one of the founding members of the Royal National Theatre in the 1960s and appeared in numerous productions alongside the legendary Laurence Olivier.
Her first major breakthrough in cinema came with her role as Desdemona in "Othello" (1965), a film she starred in alongside Olivier, which earned her her first Oscar nomination.
However, it was her performance as the idealistic and manipulative teacher in the 1969 film "The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie" that transformed her into an international star; this role won her the Academy Award for Best Actress (Oscar).

Throughout the 1970s and 80s, Smith remained at the pinnacle of both cinema and theatre, winning the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for her performance in Neil Simon's "California Suite" (1978), making her one of the rare actors with two Oscars. She proved herself among the most distinguished figures in British cinema through films such as "A Room with a View" (1985) and "The Lonely Passion of Judith Hearne" (1987). Known for her sharp intellect, impeccable timing, and mastery of both comedy and drama, Dame Maggie Smith entered the new millennium with two monumental projects that introduced her to younger generations. In the "Harry Potter" film series (2001–2011), adapted from J.K. Rowling's works, she portrayed Professor Minerva McGonagall—a stern yet golden-hearted character—that transformed her into a global pop culture icon. Subsequently, she made television history by playing Violet Crawley, Countess of Grantham, in the period drama "Downton Abbey" (2010–2015). Her portrayal of a sharp-tongued, quick-witted, and traditionalist aristocrat became one of the show's most beloved elements, earning her three Emmy Awards.

In the later stages of her career, she continued to be productive by starring in films such as "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" (2011) and "The Lady in the Van" (2015). Throughout her career, she won two Oscars, five BAFTAs, four Emmys, and one Tony Award, placing her among the select artists who have earned the title of "Triple Crown of Acting." In 1990, she was honored with the title of "Dame" by Queen Elizabeth II. The legendary actress passed away peacefully in the hospital where she was undergoing treatment in London on September 27, 2024.
