Biography
John M. Slattery Jr., born on August 13, 1962, in Boston, Massachusetts, USA, was the child of an Irish Catholic family. Discovering his interest in acting at a young age, Slattery graduated with a bachelor's degree from the School of Fine Arts at The Catholic University of America in 1984. Following his graduation, the actor began honing his craft on stage and entered the worlds of television and cinema from the late 1980s onward. In the early years of his television career, he portrayed memorable roles in various series such as "Homefront," "Ed," "Will & Grace," "Judging Amy," and "Brothers & Sisters." His recognition by a wide audience came with his role as Victor Lang in the highly popular series "Desperate Housewives" (2007). However, the iconic role that propelled John Slattery to international fame and garnered praise from both critics and audiences was his portrayal of advertising agency partner Roger Sterling in AMC's legendary period drama "Mad Men" (2007–2015).
This unforgettable performance, marked by his silver hair, charismatic presence, and mocking wit, left an indelible mark on the series, earning him four nominations for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series at the prestigious Primetime Emmy Awards and propelling his career to new heights. Alongside his major success in television, Slattery has maintained a steady and powerful career in cinema, gaining a vast fanbase through his portrayal of Howard Stark, father of Tony Stark, in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). He appeared as this character in "Iron Man 2" (2010), "Ant-Man" (2015), "Captain America: Civil War" (2016), and "Avengers: Endgame" (2019). Another significant milestone in his film career was his role as investigative journalist Ben Bradlee Jr. in the Academy Award-winning film "Spotlight" (2015). Additionally, he appeared in supporting roles in numerous other notable productions, including "Flags of Our Fathers" (2006) and "The Adjustment Bureau" (2011). Beyond acting, Slattery has been highly productive behind the camera, directing multiple episodes of the series "Mad Men" and "Love" throughout his career.
He made his feature film directing debut with the independent production "God's Pocket" (2014), in which he starred alongside his close friend Philip Seymour Hoffman, and returned to the director's chair with the 2023 release "Maggie Moore (s)," starring Jon Hamm. He continues to actively pursue his career as a respected character actor in both television and cinema.
