Biography

Kerry Washington was born on January 31, 1977, in The Bronx, New York, USA.
Washington, the daughter of a real estate agent and a professor, grew up in a family that placed great emphasis on education.
While studying Anthropology and Sociology at George Washington University, she graduated with Phi Beta Kappa honors and simultaneously received acting training at Michael Howard Studios.
Although she began her professional career in 1994 with television films, her first notable screen appearance came with the film "Our Song" (2000).
However, the production that introduced her to a young audience was the youth drama "Save the Last Dance" (2001), in which she starred alongside Julia Stiles.
In the mid-2000s, particularly through her performances in biographical films, she garnered critical acclaim.
She portrayed Della Bea Robinson, the wife of Ray Charles, played by Jamie Foxx, in his Oscar-winning film "Ray" (2004).
Subsequently, she played Kay Amin in "The Last King of Scotland" (2006), a role that earned Forest Whitaker an Oscar.

During the same period, she appeared in big-budget superhero films such as "Fantastic Four" (2005) and its sequel, playing the role of Alicia Masters. The project that changed Kerry Washington's career forever and transformed her into a television icon was Shonda Rhimes' political thriller series "Scandal" (2012–2018). The character she portrayed in the series, crisis management expert Olivia Pope, not only left its mark on popular culture but also made history as the first African-American woman to play the lead role in a drama series broadcast on American network television since 1974. For this role, she was nominated for two Primetime Emmy Awards and once for a Golden Globe Award. At the peak of her success in television, Washington further solidified her power in cinema by playing Broomhilda von Shaft in Quentin Tarantino's western film "Django Unchained" (2012). Following "Scandal," Washington focused on her producing career and signed significant projects through her own production company, Simpson Street. In the HBO film "Confirmation" (2016), she portrayed Anita Hill.

Subsequently, she earned four Emmy nominations for her mini-series "Little Fires Everywhere" (2020), in which she served as both producer and co-star alongside Reese Witherspoon. Washington has also tackled social issues through projects such as "American Son" (2019), which appeared on Broadway stages and in cinema, and more recently starred in the series "The School for Good and Evil" (2022) and "UnPrisoned" (2023). Kerry Washington, who has been featured in Time magazine's list of the "100 Most Influential People in the World," is also recognized for her active advocacy on human rights and women's rights alongside her acting career.

Actor Assistant

Kerry Washington reached her audience with youth dramas and biographical films in the early stages of her career, but she established her true prestige through leading cinematic performances such as in the Oscar-winning "Ray." During this period, she successfully reflected the inner worlds of characters through her profound acting. In her transition to television, she became one of the most iconic figures in pop culture with Shonda Rhimes' series "Scandal," managing to attract not only popular TV viewers but also critics. As an actress, Washington has demonstrated versatility by taking on roles in both high-budget superhero films and dramatic parts carrying intense emotional weight. However, throughout her career, particularly her long-term roles in television series and the repetition of character types within specific genres, it is perceived that opportunities to explore a broader range in the cinematic world have been limited. This situation has hindered the full exploration of her talent across different genres.
