Biography

Lena Kathren Headey was born on October 3, 1973, in Hamilton, Bermuda. The daughter of a Yorkshire police officer and a nurse, Headey lived in Bermuda until she turned five before returning to England with her family, where she spent her childhood in Somerset and West Yorkshire. Despite not receiving acting training during her youth, she was discovered at age 17 in a school production at the Royal National Theatre. This serendipitous discovery enabled her to appear alongside Jeremy Irons in the 1992 film "Waterland" and launch her professional career with rapid momentum. In her early career years, she took on supporting roles in period films and dramas. Her performances in the Oscar-nominated films "The Remains of the Day" (1993) and "The Jungle Book" (1994) charted a steady upward trajectory. Although she increased her recognition with films such as "Imagine Me & You" (2005) and "Grimm", it was Zack Snyder's cult comic book adaptation "300" (2006) that propelled her to the status of an international action star.

In this film, her portrayal of Spartan Queen Gorgo demonstrated to the entire world her ability to embody powerful and authoritative female characters. She cemented this achievement by bringing iconic Sarah Connor to life in the cult television series "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles" (2008–2009). Lena Headey's career reached its peak with her performance as Cersei Lannister in HBO's "Game of Thrones" (2011–2019), a role that etched her name into television history in gold letters. Her portrayal of the cruel, manipulative, and complex queen of the Seven Kingdoms earned her worldwide fame, along with five Primetime Emmy Award nominations and one Golden Globe nomination. With the human depth she infused into Cersei, Headey transformed the character into one of the most unforgettable "villains" in television history. During the "Game of Thrones" era, she also selected ambitious roles for cinema. She once again showcased her mastery of villainous characters with her role as drug baroness Ma-Ma in the film "Dredd" (2012). Additionally, she appeared in box office hits such as the horror film "The Purge" (2013) and the biographical film "Fighting with My Family" (2019).

Following the series, Headey continued her career without interruption, starring in the Netflix action film "Gunpowder Milkshake" (2021) and portraying Dorothy Hunt in HBO's political satire series "White House Plumbers" (2023). Additionally, she worked as a voice actor in animated productions such as "Trollhunters" and "Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance." In recent years, she has also moved behind the camera, working on her first feature-length directorial project, "The Trap." Headey is married to actor Marc Menchaca and is the mother of two children.
