Biography
Walter Charles Dance was born on 10 October 1946 in Redditch, Worcestershire, England. Initially interested in art and design, Dance pursued graphic design training at Leicester College of Art before turning to acting. He laid a solid foundation for his career in the mid-1970s by joining the Royal Shakespeare Company (RSC), one of England's most prestigious theatre ensembles. After performing on stage for many years, he became highly skilled in classical roles. His major television breakthrough came with the mini-series "The Jewel in the Crown," which aired in 1984 and received widespread acclaim. This role established him as a renowned figure both in Britain and internationally. Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, Dance also made his mark in cinema, often portraying charismatic, intellectual, and frequently villainous characters. He delivered unforgettable performances in films such as "The Golden Child" (1986), "Alien 3" (1992), "Last Action Hero" (1993), and "Michael Collins" (1996).
However, the role that introduced Charles Dance to a new global generation of audiences and earned him worldwide fame was his portrayal of the ruthless, intelligent, and authoritative patriarch Tywin Lannister in HBO's phenomenon "Game of Thrones" (2011–2015). With his commanding presence, resonant voice, and mastery in reflecting the character's complexity, Tywin Lannister is regarded as one of the most iconic villains in television history. This role sparked a renaissance in his career. He continued to appear in prestigious projects following "Game of Thrones," including roles in Robert Altman's "Gosford Park" (2001) and the Oscar-winning "The Imitation Game" (2014). In television, he was nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for his portrayal of Lord Mountbatten in Netflix's acclaimed series "The Crown" (2019–2020). Beyond acting, he also directed and wrote the 2004 film "Ladies in Lavender," starring alongside Judi Dench and Maggie Smith.
Charles Dance, known for his imposing physique, deep and resonant voice, and the weight he brings to the characters he portrays, continues his career as one of Britain's most distinguished and talented actors, both through his roots in classical theatre and his iconic roles in modern popular culture.
