Biography

Michael Douglas, one of Hollywood's most respected and enduring figures, was born on September 25, 1944, in New Brunswick, New Jersey, as the son of legendary actor Kirk Douglas and actress Diana Dill. Despite growing up in a family deeply immersed in the arts, he took significant steps to emerge from his father's shadow and forge his own identity. After receiving drama training at the University of California, Santa Barbara, he launched his career on stage in New York theaters. Douglas gained widespread recognition with the popular police procedural series "The Streets of San Francisco", in which he shared leading roles with Karl Malden from 1972 to 1976. However, his first major impact in the film world came behind the camera. He produced the adaptation of Ken Kesey's novel, "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" (1975), for which he inherited rights from his father. The film won five major Academy Awards, including Best Picture, bringing Douglas significant prestige as a producer. In the 1980s, Douglas became one of Hollywood's leading stars, signing off on numerous films that achieved both commercial and critical success during this period.

He solidified his status with films such as "Romancing the Stone" (1984) and "Fatal Attraction" (1987). He reached the peak of his career with Oliver Stone's "Wall Street" (1987). In this film, he won the Academy Award for Best Actor for portraying the ruthless financier Gordon Gekko and his iconic line, "Greed is good." During the 1990s, he continued to achieve success with unforgettable films such as "Basic Instinct" (1992), "Falling Down" (1993), and "The Game" (1997). In the 2000s, Douglas continued his prolific career and garnered acclaim for his performance in Steven Soderbergh's "Traffic" (Traffic) (2000). He won an Emmy and a Golden Globe Award for his portrayal of Liberace in the TV film "Behind the Candelabra" (2013). To connect with a new generation of audiences, he met them in the Marvel Cinematic Universe as the brilliant scientist Dr. Hank Pym in "Ant-Man" (2015) and its sequels. Finally, Michael Douglas further cemented his legacy with his portrayal of Benjamin Franklin in the series "Franklin" (2024). As both an actor and producer, he left an indelible mark on cinema history with a career spanning more than half a century.
