Following his parents' divorce, he moved to Chicago with his mother and siblings, where he studied at the prestigious Goodman School of Drama affiliated with DePaul University, laying the foundation for his theater and acting career. He made a striking debut in cinema with the independent horror film "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer" (1986), which is based on the life of a real serial killer and generates controversy due to its dark atmosphere. His chilling and composed portrayal of the psychopathic character Henry captivated critics, securing him a solid place in the industry. Throughout the late 1980s and 1990s, Rooker became known for successful supporting roles in which he typically portrayed tough, neurotic characters, villains, or authority figures. During this period, he appeared in significant studio productions such as "Eight Men Out" (1988), "Mississippi Burning" (1988), "Sea of Love" (1989), "Days of Thunder" (1990) alongside Tom Cruise, Oliver Stone's "JFK" (1991), and the action hit "Cliffhanger" (1993) with Sylvester Stallone.
Additionally, he demonstrated his versatility across different genres through his performances in "Tombstone" (1993) and Kevin Smith's "Mallrats" (1995). The rebellious survival expert Merle Dixon character he portrayed in the first seasons of AMC's hit zombie series "The Walking Dead" (2010–2013) earned Rooker a massive and new fanbase. His performance, particularly in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" (2017), which was imbued with emotional depth, garnered widespread acclaim from both audiences and critics. He reprised the role in the series' third film (2023) and a holiday special episode. Carrying his strong collaboration with James Gunn into the DC universe, he portrayed the Savant character in "The Suicide Squad" (2021).
The experienced actor, who maintains a presence in popular culture projects, appeared as Buddy in the box office record-breaker "Fast X" (2023) and joined the cast of Kevin Costner's ambitious western series "Horizon: An American Saga" (2024).
