Biography
Morgan Freeman was born on June 1, 1937, in Memphis, Tennessee.
The son of a teacher mother and a barber father, Freeman spent his childhood in different states such as Mississippi and Indiana.
After graduating from high school, he turned down a theatre scholarship from Jackson State University and joined the United States Air Force.
After serving as a radar technician for four years, he left the military to pursue his childhood dream of acting and moved to Los Angeles.
Freeman began his career on stage in theatre productions and as a dancer, gaining his first recognition through roles in the popular children's program "The Electric Company" (1971–1977), which aired during the 1970s.
However, he achieved his major breakthrough in cinema at a relatively late age, at 50 years old.
He received his first Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his role as "Fast Black" in the film "Street Smart" (1987).
He solidified this achievement with his portrayal of Hoke Colburn in "Driving Miss Daisy" (1989), a performance that earned him a Golden Globe and another Oscar nomination.
During the same period, he also received critical acclaim for his role as a soldier in the film "Glory" (1989).
The production that established Morgan Freeman as one of the most respected figures in cinema history and reinforced his image as "the wise man" was Frank Darabont's "The Shawshank Redemption" (1994). In this film, Freeman portrayed the character Ellis Boyd "Red" Redding and served as the narrator; it is consistently ranked among the greatest films of all time on platforms such as IMDb. Throughout the 1990s, he maintained his position at the peak with projects such as David Fincher's cult thriller "Se7en" (1995) and Clint Eastwood's western masterpiece "Unforgiven" (1992). After a long period of anticipation, Freeman won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role as Eddie "Scrap-Iron" Dupris in Clint Eastwood's "Million Dollar Baby" (2004). Thanks to his charismatic presence and reassuring, distinctive voice, he played the role of God in "Bruce Almighty" (2003). Additionally, he played a pivotal role in Christopher Nolan's "The Dark Knight" trilogy (2005–2012) as Lucius Fox, Bruce Wayne's technology expert, in one of modern cinema's most significant franchises.
Freeman is not only a brand through his acting but also through his narration, having lent his voice to documentaries such as "March of the Penguins" (2005). In recent years, he was once again nominated for an Oscar for portraying Nelson Mandela in the film "Invictus" (2009). The veteran actor, who has appeared in action films like the "Now You See Me" series and "Lucy" (2014), continues his career as one of Hollywood's most prolific and respected figures.
