Biography
Oona Castilla Chaplin was born on June 4, 1986, in Madrid, Spain.
Granddaughter of Charlie Chaplin, one of the most iconic figures in cinema history, and Oona O'Neill, she is the daughter of actress Geraldine Chaplin and Chilean director Patricio Castilla; thus, she was born into a family with a rich artistic heritage.
She is also a great-granddaughter of the renowned playwright Eugene O'Neill.
Having spent her childhood in Spain, Switzerland, and Cuba, the actor possesses a multicultural background and speaks Spanish, English, and French fluently.
Following her early interest in theatre and dance, she studied drama at Gordonstoun School in Scotland on a scholarship and subsequently was accepted into the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA), from which she graduated in 2007.
After graduating, Chaplin entered the English television and film industry, beginning to showcase her talent and attract attention through roles in productions such as "Spooks," the popular British series "Sherlock," and "The Hour" (2011–2012).
One of her first small experiences in cinema was in the James Bond film "Quantum of Solace" (2008).
She achieved her major breakthrough, which propelled her to global recognition and marked a genuine explosion in her career, by portraying the character Talisa Maegyr (Stark) in the fantastical HBO series "Game of Thrones" (2012–2013), one of the most popular and influential productions in television history. This role, central to some of the show's most shocking and unforgettable episodes, enabled her to build a vast international fanbase. Following "Game of Thrones," she brought the character Greta to life in the iconic episode "White Christmas" (2014) of the acclaimed popular science fiction anthology "Black Mirror." Continuing her film career with romantic dramas such as "The Longest Ride" (2015) and the independent production "Anchor and Hope" (2017), in which she starred alongside her mother Geraldine Chaplin, she also remained active in television, portraying powerful characters. In particular, she once again demonstrated the depth of her acting talent and her affinity for challenging roles by playing Zilpha Geary in the dark, stylized period drama "Taboo" (2017), in which she shared the lead with Tom Hardy. More recently, she appeared on screen in the espionage mini-series "Treason" (2022).
Preparing for one of her most ambitious and significant cinematic projects, Oona Chaplin has joined the cast to portray an important Na'vi character named Varang in the eagerly awaited sequels to James Cameron's box office record-breaking epic science fiction series. Drawing strong inspiration from her globally renowned roots, this talented actress has successfully established herself on her own feet and continues to thrive with a versatile career through international and prestigious projects.
