Biography

Richard Grant Esterhuysen, known professionally as Richard E. Grant, was born on May 5, 1957, in Mbabane, Swaziland, which was then a British colony. Of English descent and with a father who served as the education minister under the British government in the region, Grant spent his childhood and early youth in Africa. After studying English and drama at the University of Cape Town, he left his homeland in 1982 to pursue his acting dreams by moving to London. In the early years of his career, the actor appeared on English theatre stages before making his mark in cinema with the independent black comedy cult classic "Withnail & I" (1987). His unforgettable performance as the unemployed, alcoholic, and selfish character Withnail made him a star overnight. Following this striking breakthrough, he expanded his range by taking roles in films of diverse genres such as "How to Get Ahead in Advertising" (1989), "Bram Stoker's Dracula" (1992), "The Age of Innocence" (1993), "Jack & Sarah" (1995), and "Spice World" (1997).

His refined demeanor, sharp diction, and mastery in portraying cynical, eccentric, or aristocratic characters made him one of Hollywood's and British cinema's most sought-after faces. In the 2000s, Grant, who brought character roles to life in prestigious productions such as Robert Altman's "Gosford Park" (2001) and "The Iron Lady" (2011), reached the pinnacle of his career's greatest and most mature phase with the film "Can You Ever Forgive Me?" (2018). In this film, which he starred in alongside Melissa McCarthy, his portrayal of the tragicomic Jack Hock earned him widespread acclaim from both critics and audiences; this captivating performance earned him his first Academy Award (Oscar) nomination for Best Supporting Actor, as well as BAFTA and Golden Globe nominations. In recent years, the veteran actor has frequently appeared in independent films, big-budget studio productions, and global projects of popular culture, including playing the ruthless Dr. Zander Rice in "Logan" (2017), Allegiant General Pryde in "Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker" (2019), and the beloved Classic Loki character in the Marvel series "Loki" (2021).

Finally, he garnered further acclaim for his portrayal of the eccentric aristocrat Sir James Catton in the highly acclaimed psychological thriller "Saltburn" (2023). Beyond his distinguished career on screen, Richard E. Grant continues to actively pursue his multifaceted artistic life. He wrote and directed the autobiographical film "Wah-Wah" (2005), inspired by his own childhood, and is also the founder of a successful perfume brand, Jack.
