Biography
Samuel Leroy Jackson was born on December 21, 1948, in Washington, D.C., but was raised by his mother in Chattanooga, Tennessee. During his youth, Jackson struggled with a stutter and turned to acting to overcome it; while studying marine biology at Morehouse College in Atlanta, he switched to the drama department. In the late 1960s, he actively participated in the civil rights movement. After graduating in 1972, he moved to New York, where he began his acting career by taking roles in stage plays. In the early stages of his career, he played small roles in films such as "Coming to America" (1988). His fruitful collaboration with Spike Lee marked a turning point in his career. He gained attention through his roles in Lee's films "Do the Right Thing" (1989), "Mo' Better Blues" (1990), and especially "Jungle Fever" (1991). The role of drug-addicted "Gator" in "Jungle Fever" was so compelling that the Cannes Film Festival jury created a special category for him, "Best Supporting Actor," to award him. The 1990s were the years when Jackson transformed into a global superstar.
Following appearances in box office record-breakers such as "Patriot Games" (1992) and "Jurassic Park" (1993), he entered cinema history in 1994 with his portrayal of the philosophical triggerman Jules Winnfield, who quotes from the Bible, in Quentin Tarantino's cult classic "Pulp Fiction." This performance earned him an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor and a BAFTA award. The role solidified his place in Hollywood and led to further collaborations with Tarantino on numerous projects, including "Jackie Brown" (1997), "Django Unchained" (2012), and "The Hateful Eight" (2015). Jackson proved his box office success through leading roles in action and thriller films such as "Die Hard with a Vengeance" (1995), "A Time to Kill" (1996), "The Negotiator" (1998), and "Deep Blue Sea" (1999). In 1999, he won the admiration of a new generation by portraying the wise and charismatic Jedi Master Mace Windu in George Lucas's prequel trilogy to "Star Wars". In the 2000s, he continued his career with M.
He enriched himself with his portrayal of Elijah Price in Night Shyamalan's films "Unbreakable" (2000) and "Glass" (2019). However, undoubtedly one of his most iconic roles was that of S.H.I.E.L.D. Director Nick Fury, which he began with a brief scene at the end of the 2008 film "Iron Man." This role, which became one of the cornerstones of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), saw him appear in numerous films starting with "The Avengers" (2012) and series such as "Secret Invasion" (2023).
