Biography
Susan Alexandra Weaver was born on October 8, 1949, in Manhattan, New York, USA. Growing up in an privileged environment as the daughter of Sylvester "Pat" Weaver, former chairman of NBC, and actress Elizabeth Inglis, she adopted the name "Sigourney" at age 14, inspired by a character in F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel The Great Gatsby. After completing her undergraduate studies in English Literature at Stanford University, she earned a master's degree from the prestigious Yale School of Drama. Weaver began her career on stage, and her first film appearance was a minor role in Woody Allen's Annie Hall (1977). However, it was her portrayal of Ellen Ripley in Ridley Scott's groundbreaking science fiction horror classic Alien (1979) that transformed her into a global star and revolutionized cinema history.
With this role, Weaver completely redefined the template of the female action hero on the big screen. She earned her first Academy Award nomination for Best Actress with James Cameron's sequel "Aliens" (1986) and brought this iconic character to life again in "Alien 3" (1992) and "Alien: Resurrection" (1997). Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the talented actress proved the breadth of her range by showcasing her comedic side in the popular culture phenomenon "Ghostbusters" (1984) and its sequel (1989). The year 1988 marked a rare peak in her career; she earned two Oscar nominations in the same year for her roles as primatologist Dian Fossey in the true-story-based film "Gorillas in the Mist" and in "Working Girl," and won Golden Globe awards in both categories.
With successful productions such as "The Ice Storm" (1997), "Galaxy Quest" (1999), and "The Village" (2004), Weaver continued to garner critical acclaim. In 2009, she reunited with James Cameron to bring Dr. Grace Augustine to life in the box-office record-breaking blockbuster "Avatar." In subsequent years, she appeared in projects such as "The Cabin in the Woods" (2011) and "A Monster Calls" (2016), maintaining her status as one of the most sought-after faces in science fiction and fantasy cinema. Recently, the legendary actress, who has taken on roles in Marvel series "The Defenders" (2017) and "Ghostbusters: Afterlife" (2021), returned to the cinematic legacy with a new portrayal of young Na'vi Kiri in "Avatar: The Way of Water" (2022). Sigourney Weaver continues to sustain her illustrious career as one of Hollywood's most respected and influential figures, working on other upcoming "Avatar" sequels currently in production and various prestigious projects.
