Biography

Stephen Lang was born on July 11, 1952, in New York City, USA.
As the child of a theatre-oriented family, Lang developed an early interest in the arts and began his career on stage after graduating from Swarthmore College.
The actor, who gained particular attention for his performances on Broadway, earned significant respect in the theatre world by taking on the role alongside Dustin Hoffman in Arthur Miller's classic play "Death of a Salesman," and also appeared in its television adaptation.
With his transition to film, he began demonstrating his mastery of character acting from the mid-1980s onward.
He received critical acclaim for his portrayal of journalist Freddy Lounds in Michael Mann's "Manhunter" (1986) and his performance in "Last Exit to Brooklyn" (1989).
In the 1990s, he left an indelible mark with unforgettable roles in historical and western productions.
Notably, his eccentric portrayal of Ike Clanton in the cult western "Tombstone" (1993) and his role as General George Pickett in the American Civil War drama "Gettysburg" (1993) demonstrated his remarkable versatility as an actor.

Later, he continued his success in portraying historical figures by playing Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson in the film *Gods and Generals* (2003). The project that marked Stephen Lang's greatest turning point in his career and propelled him to global superstar status was James Cameron's box-office record-breaking science fiction epic *Avatar* (2009). In the film, the harsh, merciless, and charismatic villain Colonel Miles Quaritch became one of cinema history's most memorable antagonists. This role earned Lang a Saturn Award and established him as one of the sought-after faces in action cinema. Following *Avatar*, Lang also made impactful contributions to television, starring as Commander Nathaniel Taylor in Steven Spielberg's produced series *Terra Nova* (2011). However, he achieved his second major iconic success in cinema with the 2016 horror-thriller film *Don't Breathe*. In this dialogue-light film, his portrayal of the character "The Blind Man" once again showcased his physical acting prowess and menacing aura. Following the film's unexpected success, he reprised his role in the sequel *Don't Breathe 2* in 2021.

In recent years, Stephen Lang returned to the role of Quaritch in a different form with the groundbreaking technological film "Avatar: The Way of Water" (2022), continuing his career as one of Hollywood's most respected and formidable character actors, blending the depth brought from theatre disciplines with the physical intensity demanded by blockbuster films.
