Biography
Tom Hopper was born on January 28, 1985, in Coalville, Leicestershire, England.
The actor, whose full name is Thomas Edward Hopper, studied at Ashby School and developed an interest in acting through drama lessons there.
After completing his professional stage arts training at Rose Bruford College, he launched his career with performances in plays such as "As You Like It" at Watford Palace Theatre.
His first major television breakthrough came when he portrayed Sir Percival in the BBC's beloved fantasy series "Merlin" (2010–2012).
His performance as a loyal and powerful member of the Round Table Knights highlighted his physical attributes and aptitude for action roles.
During the same period, he also appeared as a guest actor in cult series such as "Doctor Who".
However, the project that truly propelled Tom Hopper's career and established him as an international action star was the Starz series "Black Sails" (2014–2017).
In it, he portrayed William "Billy Bones" Manderly, one of the key characters in Robert Louis Stevenson's novel "Treasure Island".
It successfully portrayed his transformation from Billy's loyal crew member over four seasons to a figure who stood against Captain Flint and played a pivotal role in the island's destiny. He received praise from critics, particularly for his balanced portrayal of the character's physical strength and internal conflicts. While "Black Sails" continued, he took on the role of Dickon Tarly, brother of Samwell Tarly, in season 7 (2017) of the globally acclaimed series "Game of Thrones." Although his role was brief, his performance in the episode "The Spoils of War," where he fought shoulder to shoulder with Jaime Lannister, and his tragic ending left a lasting impression. The project that made Hopper one of today's most popular faces was Netflix's comic book adaptation "The Umbrella Academy" (2019-2024). In the series, he brought to life the character of Luther Hargreeves, who is super-strong and possesses a gorilla body as a result of an experiment. By naively reflecting the emotional fragility beneath his massive physical appearance, his loyalty to his father, and the burden of leadership, he garnered a global fanbase.
Also active in cinema, Hopper demonstrated his versatility across different genres with roles such as sharing the lead in Amy Schumer's comedy film "I Feel Pretty" (2018), playing the villain Albert Wesker in the cinematic adaptation of the iconic video game series "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City" (2021), and appearing in "Hitman's Wife's Bodyguard" (2021). Most recently, he continues his career with projects including the romantic comedy "Love in the Villa" (2022) and "Space Cadet" (2024).
