Biography
William McChord Hurt was born on March 20, 1950, in Washington, D.C., USA. Due to his father's assignment at the U.S. Department of State, he spent his childhood in various places such as Guam and Somalia. After completing his theological studies at Tufts University, he pursued his passion for acting by joining the prestigious Juilliard School in New York, where he studied alongside figures like Christopher Reeve. He began his career in the 1970s performing in New York theaters, particularly with the Circle Repertory Company, earning an Obie Award for his performances there. His film career made a striking debut with Ken Russell's 1980 film "Altered States." Subsequently, he became one of the leading male actors of the 1980s through roles in neo-noir thriller "Body Heat" (1981), directed by Lawrence Kasdan, and "The Big Chill" (1983), which captured the spirit of its era. He became known for his ability to portray thoughtful and intellectual characters. In 1985, he reached the peak of his career with his portrayal of Luis Molina, a gay prisoner in a Brazilian prison, in the film "Kiss of the Spider Woman."
With this extraordinary performance, he won the Best Actor award at the Cannes Film Festival, the BAFTA Award, and most importantly, the Academy Award for Best Actor (Oscar). He cemented this achievement with back-to-back Oscar nominations over two additional years for his roles in "Children of a Lesser God" (1986) and "Broadcast News" (1987), becoming one of the rare actors to accomplish such feats. Throughout the 1990s and 2000s, he continued to demonstrate his versatility by appearing in a wide variety of films, including "The Accidental Tourist" (1988), "Until the End of the World" (1991), "Smoke" (1995), and Steven Spielberg's "A.I. Artificial Intelligence" (2001). In 2005, he received his fourth Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor for his brief yet profoundly impactful role in David Cronenberg's "A History of Violence". In the later stages of his career, Hurt became known primarily for character roles, appearing in productions such as "Into the Wild" (2007) and "Robin Hood" (2010).
He joined the Marvel Cinematic Universe by portraying General Thaddeus "Thunderbolt" Ross in the 2008 film *The Incredible Hulk*, and reprised the role in *Captain America: Civil War* (2016), *Avengers: Infinity War* (2018), *Avengers: Endgame* (2019), and *Black Widow* (2021). William Hurt passed away on March 13, 2022, one week before his 72nd birthday, due to complications from prostate cancer.
