Zoë Yadira Saldaña Nazario was born on June 19, 1978, in Passaic, New Jersey, USA.
The daughter of a Dominican father and a Puerto Rican mother, Saldaña spent her early childhood in Queens, New York.
After losing her father in a tragic traffic accident at the age of nine, she moved with her family to the Dominican Republic, where she trained in ballet at a prestigious dance academy and discovered her great talent for performing arts.
Upon returning to New York at seventeen, she joined theatre groups such as "Faces" and "New York Youth Theater," laying the foundations for her acting career.
Saldaña made her screen debut with an episode of the hit series "Law & Order" in 1999 and stepped into cinema with the film "Center Stage" (2000), aided significantly by her dance background.
After drawing attention in films such as "Crossroads" (2002) and "Drumline" (2002), she gained widespread recognition with her first major role as the daring pirate Anamaria in "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" (2003).

These two massive productions established her as one of the most sought-after female actors in modern science fiction and action cinema. She further proved her ability to lead solo in the action genre with her starring role in "Colombiana" (2011). Saldaña's unshakable position in popular culture was further solidified by joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe and portraying the deadly assassin Gamora in "Guardians of the Galaxy" (2014). She continued this iconic role across the franchise's sequels as well as billion-dollar blockbusters such as "Avengers: Infinity War" (2018) and "Avengers: Endgame" (2019).
