David Cronenberg's "M. Butterfly" (1993), a cinematic adaptation of the Tony Award-winning play, offers a profound psychological and cultural analysis within the romantic drama genre. The narrative structure adopts an internal monologue style that emphasizes the character's inner conflicts, immersing the audience in Rene Gallimard's process of infidelity. The pacing is directed to reflect the character's psychological transformation; particularly during the period following the beginning of the relationship, the tension provides the audience with a deep internal experience. However, this structure can lead to a loss of intensity in certain scenes, and the character development remains limited, especially due to insufficient revelation of Song Liling's inner world. In terms of language use, the film pushes the boundaries of classical romantic drama by offering a structure that also includes political and cultural critiques. Thematic consistency is strongly maintained, particularly through the concepts of "infidelity" and "beauty"; however, this depth feels lacking in some aspects of these themes. Especially, the characters' motivations and relationships need to be conveyed to the audience not only through external events but also through internal transformations.
At this point, the psychological depth of the characters in the film fails to align with the classic dramatic elements offered by the genre. However, this shortcoming simultaneously directs the film toward a structure built more upon psychological analysis.
