Biography
Jeremy John Irons was born on 19 September 1948 in Cowes, Isle of Wight, England. The son of an accountant father and a housewife mother, Irons began his education at Sherborne School, an independent institution in Dorset. Although he initially dreamed of becoming a veterinarian, his passion for theatre led him to pursue acting training at the Bristol Old Vic Theatre School. After graduating, Irons stepped into his career by performing on stage, appearing in numerous classic plays at London's prestigious theatres. He made his first notable screen appearance with the globally acclaimed television series "Brideshead Revisited", released in 1981. His portrayal of the character Charles Ryder in this production earned him international fame. In the same year, he made a strong debut in the film world with "The French Lieutenant's Woman" (1981), sharing leading roles with Meryl Streep. Throughout the 1980s, he demonstrated his mastery by bringing complex characters to life in critically acclaimed films such as "Betrayal" (1983) and "Dead Ringers" (1988).
In David Cronenberg's *Dead Ringers*, his dual role as interdependent twin gynecologists became one of the most unforgettable performances of his career. He reached the peak of his career with *Reversal of Fortune* (1990), in which he portrayed Claus von Bülow, earning an Academy Award for Best Actor for this captivating performance. Throughout the 1990s, he continued to demonstrate his versatility by voicing the iconic villain Scar in Disney's legendary animated film *The Lion King* (1994), leaving a lasting mark on popular culture. He also ventured into action cinema, delivering a memorable performance as Simon Gruber opposite Bruce Willis in *Die Hard with a Vengeance* (1995). His range expanded further through roles in Bernardo Bertolucci's *Stealing Beauty* (1996) and *Lolita* (1997). In the 2000s and 2010s, Irons appeared in productions such as *Kingdom of Heaven* (2005) and *Margin Call* (2011), and joined the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), bringing Alfred Pennyworth, Batman's loyal butler, to life.
He portrayed this role in the films "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" (2016), "Justice League" (2017), and "The Flash" (2023). In television, he garnered significant acclaim for his portrayal of Pope Alexander VI in "The Borgias" (2011–2013) and his performance as Ozymandias in HBO's "Watchmen" (2019). Beyond acting, Irons is an active environmental advocate who produced and hosted the documentary "Trashed" (2012), which highlights waste management and global pollution issues. He is one of the rare individuals to have won all three major awards—Oscar, Emmy, and Tony—thereby achieving the title of "Triple Crown of Acting" in cinema and theatre history.
