Biography
Michael McElhatton was born on September 12, 1963, in Dublin, Ireland. The actor, who grew up in Terenure, completed his arts education at the world-renowned Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London, graduating in 1987. In the early years of his career, he gained experience on stage, particularly at prestigious venues such as the Royal National Theatre and the Royal Court Theatre. An interesting detail in McElhatton's career is that, although international audiences came to know him through serious and menacing roles, he achieved fame in his homeland, Ireland, as a comedy icon. The character "Rats," which he portrayed in the mockumentary-style comedy series "Paths to Freedom" (2000), whose screenplay he also wrote, and its sequel film "Spin the Bottle" (2003), holds cult status in Irish popular culture. His success in these projects earned him an award from the Irish Film and Television Academy (IFTA). However, McElhatton's rise to global stardom and his entry into Hollywood came with HBO's phenomenally successful series "Game of Thrones" (2012–2016). In the series, he brought to life the character of Roose Bolton, the cold-blooded, calculating, and ruthless Lord of the North.
His pivotal role in "The Red Wedding", one of the most shocking moments in television history, and the terrifying, silent authority he displayed made him one of the show's most unforgettable villains. Following this success, the actor continued his career with high-profile international productions, appearing alongside Gillian Anderson in "The Fall" (2013) and starring in big-budget films such as Guy Ritchie's "King Arthur: Legend of the Sword" (2017) and Zack Snyder's "Justice League" (2017). Additionally, he proved his versatility as a character actor by portraying prosecutor Andrei Stepashin in the critically acclaimed miniseries "Chernobyl" (2019) and Tam al'Thor, the father of the main character, in Amazon Prime's epic fantasy series "The Wheel of Time" (2021).
