Biography

Ciarán Hinds was born on 9 February 1953 in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The son of a doctor and an amateur theatre teacher, Hinds grew up immersed in the arts within a Catholic family. Although he initially followed his father's path by beginning legal studies at Queen's University Belfast, his passion for theatre prevailed; he left his education midway to enroll at the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA) in London. Hinds launched his professional career at Glasgow Citizens Theatre, where he performed in classical plays for many years, refining his acting technique. He gained respect within the international theatre community by joining Peter Brook's legendary "The Mahabharata" (1989) world tour. His entry into cinema came with John Boorman's epic fantasy film "Excalibur" (1981). However, his first significant role that brought him recognition to a wide audience was his performance as Captain Wentworth in the Jane Austen adaptation "Persuasion" (1995). This role allowed him to showcase his romantic and dramatic depth.

Hinds became an indispensable name as a character actor throughout his career, appearing in both Hollywood's big-budget productions and independent art films. He played key roles in significant examples of director-driven cinema, including Steven Spielberg's "Munich" (2005), Michael Mann's "Miami Vice" (2006), and Paul Thomas Anderson's "There Will Be Blood" (2007). One of the most iconic performances of Hinds' career was his role in HBO's cult historical series "Rome" (2005–2007). The character he portrayed, Gaius Julius Caesar, was regarded as one of television history's most successful interpretations of Caesar, thanks to his authoritative demeanor and charisma. Not unfamiliar with fantastical worlds, the actor also played Aberforth Dumbledore in "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2" (2011) and King Mance Rayder Beyond the Wall in the series "Game of Thrones" (2013–2015). Additionally, within the DC Extended Universe (DCEU), he brought Steppenwolf, the film's primary antagonist, to life using motion capture technology in "Justice League" (2017) and particularly in "Zack Snyder's Justice League" (2021), where the character was given greater depth.

One of the peaks of his career came recently with the semi-autobiographical film "Belfast" (2021), directed by his fellow townsman Kenneth Branagh. The role of the kind and wise grandfather "Pop," which he portrayed in this film, earned him a nomination for Best Supporting Actor at the Academy Awards (Oscars). Never severing ties with his theatrical roots and proving his prowess in cinema, Hinds has now appeared before audiences as the enigmatic Dark Sorcerer in the second season of the series "The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power" (2024).
