Biography
Gwendoline Tracey Philippa Christie was born on 28 October 1978 in Worthing, West Sussex, England.
Known for her striking height of 1.91 metres and her distinctive sculptural beauty, Christie initially aimed to pursue a career as a semi-professional rhythmic gymnast.
However, after suffering a serious injury to her spine that ended those aspirations, she redirected her passion toward acting.
Christie graduated from the prestigious Drama Centre London in 2005 and gained experience on stage during her early career years under the mentorship of established figures such as Simon Callow.
During this period, she also worked as a model for photographer Polly Borland's "Bunny" project, thereby attracting attention within the avant-garde art world.
Her entry into cinema came with a small role in Terry Gilliam's film *The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus* (2009).
However, it was her role as Brienne of Tarth in HBO's legendary series *Game of Thrones* (2012–2019) that transformed Gwendoline Christie into a global phenomenon and permanently reshaped her career.
For this role, which she took on during the show's second season, she underwent intensive physical training, increased her muscle mass, and cut her iconic blonde hair.
As an honorable, loyal, and traditional woman knight who challenged gender roles, her performance received great praise from both critics and audiences. In 2019, she was nominated for an Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress following her own application for the series, crowning her success. Her success in "Game of Thrones" opened doors to Hollywood's biggest box office franchises. She portrayed Commander Lyme in "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2" (2015). Immediately after, she brought Captain Phasma, the ruthless commander of the First Order, to life in "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" (2015) and "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" (2017). With this role, she became one of the first female villains in Star Wars history. In later stages of her career, Christie continued to showcase her versatility across different genres, proving her dramatic depth as Miranda Hilmarson in Jane Campion's "Top of the Lake: China Girl" (2017). She also displayed her comedic talent in "The Personal History of David Copperfield" (2019). Christie further increased her popularity with roles in two major Netflix projects recently.
In the cult series "The Sandman" (2022), adapted from Neil Gaiman's graphic novel, she portrayed Lucifer Morningstar, the ruler of Hell, bringing a gender-neutral and majestic interpretation to the character. In the same year, in Tim Burton's "Wednesday" (2022), she played Larissa Weems, headmistress of Nevermore Academy, presenting an image that was the exact opposite of her Brienne character—stylish and sophisticated—once again proving the breadth of her acting range. Beyond her acting, Gwendoline Christie is also a darling of the fashion world, recognized as a unique style icon, and has been in a long-term relationship with designer Giles Deacon.
