Biography

John Ortiz was born on May 23, 1968, in Brooklyn, New York, to a family of Puerto Rican descent.
Growing up in Bushwick, Brooklyn, Ortiz began his career on stage and left a profound mark in the field.
His passion for theater led him, in 1992, to co-found LAByrinth Theater Company—one of New York’s most respected theater ensembles today—with a group of artists that included the late actor Philip Seymour Hoffman.
For many years, Ortiz served as artistic director of the company alongside Hoffman, performing on stage himself while also championing the development of new plays and emerging artists.
He launched his film career in 1993 with Brian De Palma’s *Carlito’s Way*, playing Guajiro, Pacino’s cousin.
From this first role onward, he became a sought-after character actor, renowned for the depth and originality he brought to his roles.
Throughout his career, he appeared in significant films such as *Ransom* (1996), *Amistad* (1997), and *Before Night Falls* (2000).

In the 2000s, he garnered significant acclaim for his roles as the ruthless drug lord Jose Yero in Michael Mann's "Miami Vice" (2006) and Detective Javier J. Rivera in Ridley Scott's "American Gangster" (2007). The diversity of Ortiz's filmography demonstrates his ability to succeed in every genre. He became widely known for portraying the villainous character Arturo Braga in the "Fast & Furious" franchise. He further showcased his dramatic talent with the role of Ronnie in David O. Russell's Oscar-nominated film "Silver Linings Playbook" (2012). Additionally, he took on significant roles in major productions such as "Steve Jobs" (2015), "Kong: Skull Island" (2017), and "Bumblebee" (2018). He also drew attention with his performance as Arthur in the critically acclaimed 2023 film "American Fiction." Ortiz, who has never left the stage, appeared in Nilo Cruz's Pulitzer Prize-winning play "Anna in the Tropics" on Broadway.

Philip Seymour Hoffman's performance in the play "Jack Goes Boating" (2010), which he directed, was carried over to a film of the same name, and he was nominated for an Independent Spirit Award for this role. John Ortiz, who has had a steady and impactful career both on stage and screen, is regarded as one of today's most talented and respected character actors.
