Biography
Liam Cunningham was born on 2 June 1961 in Dublin, Ireland. Growing up in a working-class family in North Dublin, Cunningham embarked on his acting career relatively late and after an unusual background compared to his peers. The Irish-born actor left school at 15 to work as an electrician and spent years maintaining electrical installations at a safari park in Zimbabwe during the 1980s; upon returning to his homeland, he took acting lessons, marking a profound transformation in his life. His professional career began with the film "Into the West" (1992), followed by his first major internationally acclaimed performance in Alfonso Cuarón's critically praised "A Little Princess" (1995), where he portrayed both Captain Crewe and Prince Rama. He subsequently appeared in films such as "Jude" (1996) alongside Kate Winslet and the cult horror film "Dog Soldiers" (2002).
He has lived through some of the most prestigious moments of his career in independent and political cinema, earning full marks from critics and winning awards at the Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTA) for his performance as Father Dominic Moran in Ken Loach's Palme d'Or-winning film "The Wind That Shakes the Barley" (2006) and Steve McQueen's "Hunger" (2008), in which he played opposite Michael Fassbender. He has also appeared in high-budget Hollywood action films such as "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" (2008) and "Clash of the Titans" (2010). However, the role that propelled Liam Cunningham to global fame and made him an unforgettable part of popular culture is his portrayal of Ser Davos Seaworth in HBO's phenomenon series "Game of Thrones" (2012-2019). Joining the series in its second season, Davos, known by the nickname "The Onion Knight," was a former smuggler who served as Stannis Baratheon's most trusted advisor before becoming Jon Snow's most reliable confidant, placing him at the heart of the narrative.
The character's honesty, pragmatic wisdom, and unshakeable loyalty, combined with Cunningham's masterful acting, have made him one of the show's moral compasses and most beloved figures. Following the series finale, the accomplished actor continued his active work in cinema and television, taking on the role of ship captain in the horror film "Dracula: The Last Voyage" (2023), adapted from a chapter in Bram Stoker's novel. His most recent major project is Thomas Wade in Netflix's ambitious science fiction series "Three-Body Problem" (2024), where he reunited with the creators of "Game of Thrones." He continues to build on his career success by portraying the enigmatic, intelligent, and manipulative head of intelligence in this role.
